DAVID SKELLY
MUSIC TEACHER
Our interactions with music are often among the most satisfying and meaningful we have as humans. Whether you are an absolute beginner or an experienced musician looking to broaden your skill set, deepening your connection with music will make your musical experiences more meaningful and enjoyable. I am an experienced teacher with a broad skill set who can help push you to become the musician you've always wanted to be.
ABOUT ME
I am a 35 year old multi instrumentalist and music educator based in Cranston, RI with twelve years of teaching experience privately and in public schools. I have taught voice, guitar, bass, piano, drum set, percussion, trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, and saxophone to students aged 8-80. I also specialize in composition, music theory, and music production. I believe my job as an educator is to meet my students at their current level of ability and interest and work from there to meet and exceed the student's desire for progress. I am patient and teach by guiding my students with inspirational but attainable goals suited to their interests and aspirations. I'm very kind and non-threatening and enthusiastic about teaching students of all ages and abilities.
MY BACKGROUND
Educational History
I began as a Trombonist in Elementary School, but by my mid teen years had begun to pick up Guitar, Bass, Piano, and Drums. I got a B.A. in Music Education from UMass Amherst in 2011, where I learned other wind instruments and deepened my Music Theory knowledge and Aural Skills. I returned to UMass for a Master's Degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging, which I completed in 2016.
I have also kept up a thriving and active personal interest in musical creativity. I have played in bands and made hundreds of recordings since my teens, made three albums of christmas music with my family, played keyboards and occasionally drums in a successful cover band, and continue to make music with my band Bunk, among other projects. A selection of media from these projects is available further down the page.

LESSONS I PROVIDE
GUITAR/BASS LESSONS
I am an experienced and accomplished guitarist, bassist, and teacher and am comfortable instructing students at all levels. My focus as a teacher is to help my students accomplish their goals, whether they be rhythm playing, songwriting, working with written notation, jazz soloing, or blues/rock lead playing.
PIANO LESSONS
My focus as a piano teacher is to get my students making their own music as soon as possible. If you are looking to be able to sit at a piano and feel comfortable improvising, composing, collaborating with your friends, and reading the works of classical and jazz composers, I will be able to help you get there.
VOICE LESSONS
Each singer is different, and my goal as a voice teacher is to help you find your voice. We'll use the music you already love as well as my suggestions to design exercises and work toward a satisfying performance.
DRUM LESSONS
Whether you're working on stick control and hoping to play with drum and bugle corps or hoping to sit behind a kit and rock out, I'm an adept drummer who can push you toward becoming the drummer you want to be!
BRASS/WOODWIND
I have taught Trumpet, Trombone, Flute, Clarinet, and Saxophone to Elementary, Middle, and High School students for seven years. Whether you're looking to better prepare for an audition or increase your skills generally, I will drive you toward your goals.
THEORY/COMPOSITION
Music Theory allows musicians to understand more deeply the 'Why?' of the music they already know and love. If this is an aspect of your musicianship you wish were stronger, I can help make connections that will improve your ear and deepen your appreciation. I am also an experienced songwriter and can help you learn to use your skills in the most creative and satisfying ways
RECORDING/TECHNOLOGY
If you're looking to increase your musical skills in the technological realm, I can help get you there. Home recording is a very fun and accessible way to interact with music, and I can help show you how to get up and running and making recordings that sound good without paying for a studio.
David is an excellent teacher: loose, fluid, funny, enthusiastic, and truly well grounded in musical theory, practice, and history. As both a schooled and working musician, he plays and can teach a myriad of instruments: keys, horns, percussion, all things stringed, and voice — although, for me, its always most joyous to hear him add his Rickenbacker bass lines to anything. As a high school teacher, myself, I get to see and hear him work across a spectrum of our students which spans beginning teenaged learners, some of whom are gifted and others decidedly more enthusiastic than gifted, to myself — a middle-aged, consciously incompetent guitarist, playing since I was 15, but wishing to learn all the theory that I utterly do not know. So, intervals, chord progressions and The Circle of Fifths it’s been, for me. But David can also translate any song I bring in, asking What am I hearing here? — even one by, say, a master like Ry Cooder — into both understandable theory and a workable-for-me chart. Meanwhile, I’ve also watched David carefully assist one pitch-perfect student’s painstaking recreation and recording of every layer of a Beach Boys’ number: drums, bass, guitars, layers of vocals, keyboards, ukulele — the full Brian Wilson. Likewise, I’ve watched David shepherd many other students — working in solos, duets and groups — into graceful, unstressed public performances. And he does the same thing when performing, whether by himself or sensitively backing others. David manages all of these levels beautifully and with a great, palpable joy. Good company, smart and challenging lessons: what more do we want from our teachers?
